Essentials is the plan for the business that has stopped being a one person show. Three users work in the books at the same time, each with their own login, and your accountant still gets free access on top. At R508 per month in rand it sits comfortably between the entry plan and the fuller Plus tier, and like every QuickBooks plan it starts with a 30 day free trial and runs month to month.

The headline additions over Simple Start are on the money out side. Bill management lets you capture supplier invoices when they arrive, schedule them for payment and see exactly what is due this week rather than discovering it in the bank balance. Multiple currency support matters more than you might expect in South Africa: if you invoice a client in dollars or pay a supplier in euros, Essentials handles the conversion and tracks the gains and losses properly. Time entry rounds it out, letting staff record hours against customers for billing.

The AI features carry across from the lower plan and go further, with the Accounting AI cleanup tools spotting transactions that need attention before they become reconciliation problems. What you do not get at this level is stock or project profitability, which both live in Plus. For a service business with a couple of admin people, supplier bills to juggle and the odd foreign invoice, Essentials is the natural fit.
