Overview

What is Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Business Central is Microsoft's answer for the business that has outgrown accounting software but does not want a seven figure ERP programme. It covers the full operational spine: general ledger, debtors and creditors, banking, inventory across multiple warehouses, purchasing with approvals, sales, projects and light manufacturing. Because it is Microsoft, the surrounding gravity is strong: it lives inside the same ecosystem as Outlook, Teams and Excel, and Power BI reads its data natively for reporting that finance teams genuinely enjoy building.

In South Africa the product is sold through Microsoft's cloud partner channel, and that channel matters as much as the software. Local partners handle implementation, VAT configuration at the standard 15% rate, data migration from systems like Pastel and Evolution, and ongoing support in your time zone. Licensing follows Microsoft's international list: Essentials at 80 dollars per user per month, which lands around R1,450 depending on the exchange rate and your partner agreement, Premium at around R2,000 with manufacturing and service management, and Team Members at roughly a tenth of the Essentials price for staff who only need to view and approve.

The honest picture: this is a real ERP and implementations are real projects, typically running two to six months with partner fees on top of licensing. Businesses coming from spreadsheet chaos or an aging Pastel Evolution install should budget accordingly. What you get in return is a system that will not be outgrown quickly, monthly updates from Microsoft rather than big bang upgrades, and the largest pool of consultants and developers of any mid market ERP in the country.

Our 300 user rollout landed on time and on budget

The finance team lives in Excel and the two way integration means they never fight the system. Teams embedded approvals mean directors sign off from their phones. Our partner customised the sales order screen without breaking a single update since. Recommended to every FD who asks, and they ask often.

Pros

Power BI reads live data natively

Good but not perfect for our Vanderbijlpark team

Powerful, Microsoft flavoured, and priced accordingly. Premium versus Essentials forced a decision we did not feel equipped to make.

Doing okay for our 12 person setup

Good system that keeps reminding you it is licensed per user. Performance dips at month end when everyone hammers the same ledgers.

Pros

Monthly updates, no upgrade projects

Out of the box reports are average
